Lewisham Hospital Latest Update and call for help

Dear Members and Supporters of Lewisham People Before Profit,

Firstly a warm welcome to the many new people who have asked to be added to our email list of activities in the past couple of weeks.

The plan to close Lewisham's A & E department has aroused huge public discontent and we are expecting several thousand people at Saturday's demonstration.  Can you help on Saturday?  We need people to be stewards, making sure people know where they are going and being alert for any potential problems.  Email George Hallam on george@peoplebeforeprofit.org.uk
Can you offer to carry one of our banners?  Please get back to me if you can, with your mobile number.  Mine is 07986 998 172.
Can you help make placards on Wednesday or Thursday evening in New Cross? Meet 6pm till 9.30pm at Besson Street Community Centre (see attachment for designs).

Lewisham People Before Profit members are closely involved in the campaign and have produced 30,000 postcards encouraging people to demonstrate on Saturday and to attend the consultation meetings with the Trust Special Administrator.  We are down to our last few thousand, but still need people to offer to give them out at schools and stations and also door-to-door.
The reason we produced our own cards was to give us the freedom to explain the reasons for the PFI debts which are the cause of the current crisis.

Several of us were at the first consultation in Greenwich and after the flashy video presentation we  called on the TSA, Matthew Kershaw, to campaign with us for the annulling of the PFI contracts which were put in place by Gordon Brown and which have led to NHS trusts all over Britain being saddled with impossible debt and servicing contracts.

Although the immediate aim is to save Lewisham's A & E and Maternity provision, we do need to see this in the context of an ongoing attack on the NHS which was started under Blair and continuing under Cameron. We can't be satisfied until we've put an end to measuring everything in money terms.

You may have heard that Louise Irvine, who is leading the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign is part of a new National Health Action Party which is going to stand against MPs who have been part of the break-up and sell-off of the NHS.  Read more at http://www.nationalhealthaction.org.uk/

The demonstration will assemble at 2pm at the grassy knoll at Rennell Street in Lewisham, near the huge roundabout and march via Lewis Grove and the High Street to Ladywell Fields where we will then encircle the hospital - making sure that we don't disrupt its workings.

AFTER THE DEMONSTRATION

There is a consultation meeting on Monday 26th November at 2pm at St Andrews Centre, Brockley Road/Wickham Road.  Do come along.

On Wednesday 28th November there will be a campaign meeting in The Broadway Theatre, Catford, starting at 7pm.

Tuesday 4th December at The Calabash Centre, George Lane at 7pm is the third consultation with the Special Administrator to be held in Lewisham - let's make it a night he won't forget!!!

OTHER ACTIVITIES

The next meeting of Lewisham People Before Profit will be on Monday 3rd December at The Broca Cafe, Coulgate St. near Brockley Station, starting at 7.15pm.  It will start with the AGM and election of officers for the coming year.
