A New Community Owned Solar Energy
Project in South East London

Following the success of community
owned solar energy projects in Brixton, Brighton, Bath and elsewhere a group of
residents is working to set up a not-for-profit solar energy co-operative based
in South East London. This will be a cooperatively owned enterprise that
generates renewable electricity for use by householders and for sale to the
national electricity grid.
The group is planning to
offer local people the opportunity to invest in the cooperative. This will enable
the purchase and installation solar panels on roofs in SE London. Profit earned
by the generation of solar energy and sale of clean electricity will be used to
pay a return to investors. What’s more, householders sporting solar panels on
their roofs could benefit from free solar electricity or alternatively
installation of energy efficiency measures such as draught proofing and
insulation.

Giovanna Speciale said “This is such an exciting project: it could bring real
benefits to householders struggling to pay their electricity bills whilst also
reducing carbon emissions. The setting up of a community managed cooperative
means financial revenues from the project stay in the local community”
The groups invites all those
who would like to get involved in setting up the cooperative or who would like to
find out more about investing in it or benefiting from it to come to a public
meeting on Sunday 9th March 4 – 5.30pm at the Food Bank, 467 New
Cross Road
